Multi Component Model of the Equine Distal Limb (MCM Mk2)
The Multi Component Model of the Equine Distal Limb (MCM Mk2) is a 37-piece Build-It-Yourself kitset created to promote knowledge of the structure and function of the equine distal limb. This unique 3D printed model is a teaching and learning tool created to promote knowledge of the structure and function of the equine distal limb. If you learn anatomy best by hands on, visual interaction with structures, assembling the MCM Mk2 is definitely for you. The model consists of flexible replicas of the ligaments, tendons and cartilages with hard rigid replicas of the 7 bones. Plugs on the soft tissue components fit securely into sockets on the bones to replicate the complexity and true anatomy of the equine distal limb. The components were derived from high resolution MR (4T) and CT scans of the right, fore, distal limb of a normal standardbred stallion. Segmentation of the scan data resolved each component into a discrete mesh entity (an STL file). Using CAD software (Shapr3D) each component exactly duplicated the shape and position of the original specimen. Fused deposition modelling (FDM), with coloured, flexible, thermoplastic polyurethane TPU, was used to 3D print the soft tissue components and white, polylactic acid (PLA) for the rigid bones.
