The collagen bundles resemble cables and are aligned along the lines of force that weight-bearing and locomotion generate between the distal phalanx and the lamellae of the inner hoof wall. The tendon-like bundles insert into periosteum on the prominent ridges of the bone cortex. Between the ridges are foramina traversed by arteries branching from the terminal arch of the digital arteries deep inside the bone. The collagen bundles branch into smaller fibrils within the primary dermal lamellae that interdigitate with the epidermal lamellae. Ultimately the collagen fibrils branch further into micro-filaments that insert into the basement membrane of secondary epidermal lamellae. Distributed amongst the collagen bundles, in the sub lamellar dermis, are the circular profiles of numerous veins, arteries and nerves.
